I am moved by the effects of light, color and atmosphere, and strive to translate these into paint. The highest compliments I have received are about the feeling a painting gives someone – such as a sense of calm. Elevating someone’s mood or evoking an emotional response seems a worthy pursuit.
I took up painting seriously after moving to Columbia County, where the lush landscapes, wild flora and fauna, and rural subject matter are a constant source of interest. I began painting in transparent watercolor (which I still love for its “accidental” tendencies) but have more recently been working in oils and gouache.
I studied art history at Oberlin College and the University of Michigan. I studied drawing and painting at The Art Students League of New York, and several regional and online art centers. I have numerous talented art instructors to thank for their generous guidance, including Christopher Gallego, Bernard Dellario, Pat Hogan, and Birgit O’Connor.
My work has been exhibited throughout the Northeast at various group shows, juried shows and society exhibitions. I also enjoy exhibiting online and on social media, which offer such wide-reach and responsive feedback. I am currently a member of the Northeast Watercolor Society, the American Impressionist Society, and the Spencertown Academy Arts Center, where I am also a curator.
